Reading

There are several textbooks related to tropical medicine that could be of interest to students of tropical medicine: 

• The Oxford Handbook of Tropical Medicine (Oxford University Press. 5th Edition, 2021) is comprehensive as well as being light and easy to travel with. 
• Manson's Tropical Diseases (Elsevier. 24th Edition, 2023) is comprehensive and an excellent reference book, but heavy to travel with! 
• Tropical Medicine Lecture Notes (Beeching & Gill. Wiley Blackwell. 7th Edition, 2014) is medium-sized and attractive to read, although missing some topics. 
• Principles of Medicine in Africa,(Cambridge University Press. 4th Edition, 2013) is a comprehensive textbook with a focus on Africa. 
• Clinical Cases in Tropical Medicine (Rothe et al. Elsevier. 1st Edition 2014, 2nd Edition 2020). This book uses a case-based approach and is particularly useful for revision after you have acquired some basic knowledge.
• Clinical Tropical Medicine: Board and Certification Review: designed for Certificate of Tropical Medicine (CTropMed) revision and contains hundreds of MCQs. Excellent resource but expensive. It seems this book comes from StatPearls CME service. If you have the paid account you may access the StatPearls Q-Bank.
• Tropical and travel medicine: 100 isolated questions and commented answers: This question book on tropical medicine and travel medicine is only available in hard copy. A far older edition seemed to be revised in 2022. It contains hundreds of MCQs with answers.
• The WHO Pocket book of hospital care for children (second edition, 2013) has been written for use by doctors, nurses, and other health workers who are responsible for the care of young children at first-level referral hospitals.
• Various Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) medical guidelines have been produced to help practitioners in the field.

For the latest research, check out some of the following journals: high-impact general medicine journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) and Lancet journals including the Lancet, Lancet Global Health, Lancet Infectious Diseases, Lancet Regional Western Pacific. 

Journals that are more specific to tropical medicine or neglected tropical diseases include:

• the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (AJTMH)
• Tropical Medicine and Health (official journal of the Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine)
• Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene
• Tropical Medicine & International Health (TMIH)
• PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases

In addition, the following online question and image resources may be helpful:

• ASTMH CTropMed sample questions (PDF document) and Images in Tropical Medicine Quiz
• Creepy Dreadful Wonderful Parasites: This blog has only parasitology images but provides a tremendous number of beautiful images and a weekly quiz.
• Wilderness Medicine practice tests (Utah School of Medicine): This website is for 'wilderness medicine', not directly tropical medicine, but contains some questions relevant to tropical medicine.
